It never ceases to amaze me – how in the world do those cute little figure skaters have such stinky skates! I have talked to a lot of moms and have heard a lot of suggestions on controlling odor. I know we have used those scented round fresheners for shoes and they do an ok job but for really tough odor, what to do? It sure doesn’t take long for that new smell to wear off and the smell of sweaty skates to take over the entire bag! Here are some things that might help.
1) Wash your tights often and add a dash of bleach. Don’t add too much because this will break down the fibers of your tights faster but adding a bit to the wash will help kill the bacteria in your tights and keep the odor in your skates a bit more manageable. The worst thing you can do is NOT wash your tights – this causes the bacteria to take over and the smell is equal to that of a sweaty hockey player after a long game – yuk!
2) Baking soda loves odors! Take your skates out of the bag after every use and sprinkle a little baking soda in the bottoms – then leave them out so that air can circulate through them.
3) Do you have a cat? Make little sachets out of old tights with a 1/4 cup of cat litter in each! Split a leg of your tights so that the material will lay flat and then cut as large a circle from the leg as you can. Pour the litter in the middle, stretch the tights so that you can gather the ends together and tie off with a twist tie, then cover with a fun ribbon! You can make them for all your drawers, too – just use a bit of your favorite scented potpourri instead of litter, and your clothes will smell wonderful! Um, but use clean tights
